Speech and Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapy service aims to provide evidence-based services that meet the needs of individuals who experience speech, language, communication or swallowing difficulties.
Speech and language therapists work in partnership with individuals and their families and with other professions to reduce the impact of these often isolating difficulties on people’s well-being and ability to participate in daily life.
The Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service is based at St Bernard’s Hospital and is staffed by one therapist, who manages people with swallowing and communication difficulties resulting from strokes, neurological disorders, cancer, dementia or voice disorders. Referrals are received from a number of medical, nursing and therapy services, most notably from GP’s and the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Department.
The Paediatric Speech and Language Therapy Service is based at the Primary Care Centre and is staffed by four therapists, who support children with speech, language and communication or swallowing difficulties associated with specific language impairment, learning disabilities, speech difficulties, autism, cleft palate, voice disorders, stammering, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment and selective mutism. Family-focused therapy programmes are delivered in the Primary Care Centre, in schools, nurseries and in some cases at home depending on the needs of the child.
